With the advent of relatively cheap air travel, the numbers of guides to popular locations has massively increased because of an increased demand. If you are going on holiday, then reading some travel books about the area you are visiting will give you an idea of what it has to offer, helping you get the very most out of your holiday. You can buy guides to countries, regions and even individual cities and they will inform you of good hotels, restaurants and things to do, often along with contact details too. These guides can make your holiday an awful lot easier, though they vary in quality- of course you don’t need to buy a guide- sometimes a holiday can be better if you avoid the tourist trails. However if you are looking for a series of travel books, then the lonely planet series is one of the better ones.

Lonely Planet is one of the largest producers of travel books, and they produce books that focus from continent to city- if you are going on holiday then a lonely planet will probably be a good addition. They have an enormous range of guides, all in an easy to follow format with very clear pages that allow you to access information quickly. They cover an enormous range of destinations so are very likely to have something for most travellers.

Travel Books For Entertainment

Although there is a very large market for specific travel guides, there are plenty of travel books that have been written for the entertainment of the reader. We don’t all have the time or money to visit every country we have dreamed of visiting, so why not allow a book about it to inspire you instead. Plenty of great authors have been inspired by their surroundings on foreign travels and have written fantastically interesting pieces of travel literature.

Some of the best recent travel books that offer the reader have been written by Michael Palin- the ex Monty Python star has travelled all around the world and written several books about his experiences. “Himalaya” is perhaps better known for the series that Palin did for the BBC, but the book is a great example of travel writing. It recounts Palin’s travels throughout the Himalayas in the form of a diary and contains brilliant photographs by Basil Pao that really capture the striking landscape in which they were taken. Palin has written plenty of other books as well, so if you enjoyed Himalaya, there are plenty of other books for you to enjoy.
