Dr Seuss Books

Dr Seuss was the pen name of author Theodor Seuss Geisel and he was born on the 2nd of March, 1904. His books are amongst the most iconic children’s books that are available to buy- the brilliant characters and excellent cartoon pictures make them completely unlike any other group of books. The rhyming language within the books themselves is also very clever adding to the fun nature of each of his stories.

Here are some of the most famous Dr Seuss books:

The Cat In The Hat
He cat in the hat actually features in six Dr Seuss books, but in the first book, he makes his appearance to two children who have been left at home by their mother on a rainy day. The cat gets up to all sorts of mischief to entertain the two children, but ends up creating a huge mess. However, he manages to clear it up seconds before the children’s mother arrives home.

Horton Hatches The Egg
In this story Horton the elephant agrees to sit on an egg for a lazy bird called Mayzie, while she has a break. In reality Mayzie relocates elsewhere, leaving Horton sitting on a nest in the jungle, exposed to the mockery of his jungle friends. Horton is eventually captured and sent to a circus, but keeps looking after the egg, where he bumps into Mayzie. Mayzie demands the return of the egg, but when it hatches it turns out o be half elephant, half bird!

Horton Hears a Who!
The book tells the story of Horton the elephant, who hears a speck of dust talking to him. The speck of dust is actually a planet called Whoville, and the mayor of Whoville asks Horton to protect them. Horton does so, but ends up being victimised by the other animals because they cannot see or hear the Whos. However, Horton triumphs in the end when the other animals eventually hear that the Whos exist.

Green Eggs and Ham
Green Eggs and Ham is one of the more simple Dr Seuss books, aimed at younger children. It contains just 50 different words, and centres on a character called Sam trying to convince someone to eat green eggs and ham- eventually he succeeds.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
The Grinch is a bitter creature living in a cave, outside the happy city of Whoville. He can hear the noise of Christmas preparations coming from Whoville, so makes a plan to steal all of the Who’s presents, decorations and holiday ham, to prevent Christmas from coming. However Christmas comes all the same, and the Grinch realises that Christmas is about more than just gifts and he returns everything he stole and is welcomed in by the Whos.
