Cook Books

Cooking has really come back into media popularity, with numerous shows profiling the lives of professional chefs in hectic restaurants. A result of this is there are thousands of different cook books now available to buy, each containing hundreds of different recipes. Another factor that has really helped increase the number of cook books is the internet- you can find ebooks that will give you cooking recipes and many more people have written their own cook books because they realise there is a much greater market for them.

Enough of that, the fact that there are loads of cook books out there is a great thing, as you have more choice when it comes to buying. This is especially true when it comes to buying specific cook books- you can buy cook books that specialise in chocolate puddings, soups or even making cookies and biscuits- the list is pretty much endless. This is a really good development, as plenty of competent cooks may want to improve their skills in a particular area without having to buy loads of recipes that they already have. Also the skills for cooking certain foods are actually very technical, so a book devoted to that specific type of food will give the chef the technical focus and detail that is required to make the food properly.

Another way of going about buying cook books is to buy books written by a cook that you really like- for example you might really approve of a certain chefs approach and ethos when it comes to cooking, so why not try and create great food the same way he or she does? For instance, I like Gordon Ramsey’s style of cooking, so I might buy some of his books so that I could replicate some of his recipes.

Older style cook books tended to be far less specialist than the niche books of today, so if you want a basic guide to cooking you can also find books that contain literally thousands of recipes. One of my mother’s cook books for example is from the 1930’s and contains a ridiculous number of recipes, but it is very useful as I can use it to make just about anything. This isn’t to say you have to buy a book from the 1930’s- plenty of modern equivalents are available. The great thing about buying one big tome of cookery is that you do tend to feel like you are getting decent value for money- with that many recipes you are getting a fair few recipes for your money.
