If you run your own business, are thinking about starting your own business or simply find entrepreneurial stories really interesting then reading business books is a really good idea. Business books roughly split into two groups- those written by businessmen about their experiences, providing readers with some generally sound advice, and those books that are designed to be used as guides for specific skills within business.
First of all, reading generalised business books can be really helpful for business owners and anyone interested in business, as you can learn from people who have run very successful businesses themselves. Learning from successful businessmen is undoubtedly a really good idea, as you can learn plenty about how motivated these people are, and what makes them tick. Books by businessmen and women can also provide specific tips as well as more generalised advice- for example I read a book by British businessman James Caan and he presents loads of great ways that he used to motivate people within his own organisations.
Reading general guides can be really inspiring and can provide you with some great tips, but it can be more important to look at business books that can help teach you a lot about a specific area. For example, if you felt you were in control of your business but felt that your marketing knowledge was weak, then buying a business book that specialises in teaching people about marketing would be a very sensible plan. Entrepreneurs often have to find themselves having to learn a massive variety of skills, as they lack the resources of larger business that can employ marketing professionals for example.
Here are some key elements of running a business that business books can help teach you about:
Cash Flow- Profitable businesses can still go under if they have cash flow problems- understanding the cash requirements of a business is incredibly important and understanding how to meet them is vital id you want to succeed.
Motivation- Employing people is one thing, but getting the most out of them is a whole different ball park. Luckily there are plenty of experts in psychology that work in business that have written books on how best to motivate your employees.
Pitching- Pitching for a contract or investment is a massive part of running a business as you will look shoddy if your pitch is poor. There are plenty of books helping you get the most out of your pitches and increasing your success rate on the pitching front.
Pricing- How do you price your products so that you make a decent margin whilst still attracting plenty of customers? Using appropriate pricing strategies is a key part of marketing and one that can make a massive difference to the bottom line.
