I remember first coming across these books at school, seeing that a couple of friends were absolutely engrossed in them but they looked pretty thick and I didn’t really fancy getting stuck into hundreds of pages at the time.
It was only when staying at a friend’s house in London and needing a book to read that I actually picked the first of this series “Eragon” up. The book is named after a farm boy, who lives in the village of Carvahal, who one day finds a dragon egg in the forest.
However the forces of evil under King Galbatorix want to destroy Eragon and his dragon, in case he becomes a threat to the throne. The stories chart Eragon’s progress as a dragon rider, particularly in the art of magic and the immense battles that he faces. However the saga soon becomes more than a focus on a young dragon rider, but rather a titanic clash between good and evil with various forces and alliances on each side.
It’s hard to get across how good these books really are- I genuinely think they are in the same sort of league as The Lord of the Rings, albeit a modern day version. If you have seen the film before reading the book, please don’t let this put you off- none of the cringe worthy lines that plague the film are as off putting in the text!
There are four books in the series:
Eragon
Eldest
Brisingr
Inheritance
Highly recommended, Christopher Paolini is fantastic, especially for young adult readers- 14-18 years.
